Well, Josh and I tooK Emersyn this past Thursday to a pediatric urologist at Cook's in Fort Worth. For those that don't know Emme was disagnosed with Grade 4 vesicoureteral reflux when she was a little over 2 months old. This means that her anatomy did not form properly and more than likely she does not have a valve that keeps her urine from backing up ALL the way back in her kidney. This leads to urine and kidney infections and having too many and leaving them untreated can cause severe kidney damage, which in turns means that she is on an antibiotic EVERYDAY and will have to have a cystogram, ultrasound and a renal scan every year to see if it is progressing to a grade 5 (which is the highest it can go) or IF possibly it can decrease. In her case there is only about a 20% that it can get better. SO, next step was to go to a specialist. He has recommended that we go ahead and proceed with the surgery. He stated that more that likely her condition will not change from now or when she turns a year old. We can go ahead and do the surgery and if it is successful she will be done with the antibiotics, no more tests AND I will not have to panic every time she runs a fever and worry if she is developing another infection. The procedure is called DEFLUX and it is an outpatient surgery and we should be home later that evening! He did offer to do the "open" procedure which has a higher success rate BUT I feel like I do not want to put her through that - she has already been through ALOT. Sorry this is so long but please continue to keep her in your prayers. Her surgery is scheduled for July 17th - so far it is at another specialized pediatric hospital in south Ft. Worth called USMC??? I not really sure if that is correct or it will be at Cook's - she is supposed to call and let me know which one our insurance will cover - that is a whole other story!!! I am sure I will be a total basket case when the day gets closer but I have faith in God that he will take good care of her and this will be over soon.
